Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation
While traveling in Japan with friends, I was told to take advantage of visiting the Koh Gen Do spa in Tokyo. The city that gave birth to the foundation that some describe as the holy grail of foundations and favored by many celebrity makeup artists. So I thought, why not?
History x Background
A well-known Japanese actress Ai Saotome created the brand over 30 years ago in Tokyo. Having spent long hours on set with heavy makeup the actress became concerned with her skincare routine. This concern inspired the actress to develop a skincare line that was pure and nourishing to protect the skin’s natural complexion.
This foundation continues to be used on movie sets and for everyday use. The foundation promises healthy, dewy and luminous looking skin by using Japanese skincare technology and plant-based ingredients.
Koh Gen Do products ingredients consist of Healing Botanicals, nutrient rich water and calming extracts. Avoiding any artificial ingredients and ingredients that can damage your skin.
My Facial Experience
There were a few options to choose from, the 60 min “basic course” facial (¥10,800), the 70 min “order made treatment care” facial (¥16,200) and the 70min “brightening treatment care” facial (¥16,200). I opted for the “brightening treatment care” facial because I wanted to leave that place glowing and I’m happy to say that I did.
I originally expected a facial that would exfoliate my skin and clean out my pores but I ended up getting a facial massage using Koh Gen Do products. It was the ultimate relaxing experience. Any stiffness of the head, neck, muscles, facial points, and lymph nodes were worked out to reveal glowing skin. I ended up falling asleep at one point because it was that relaxing. I highly recommend trying it out! Everyone that worked there were very kind and polite. I even had a delicious tea waiting for me in the room that tasted like rose hips which is known for regenerating new skin cells.
After my facial, I got a complimentary makeover using Koh Gen Do products. They matched my skin to their shade 113 aqua foundation.
The bottle itself is simple and sleek looking. The red logo is on the front, matching the bottom of the bottle. The foundation has an SPF of 25; it’s lightweight and water-based. I love that it has a high SPF in comparison to other liquid foundations. It has a medium coverage but buildable. I only use one pump to cover my entire face using Koh Gen Do’s foundation brush. They had a promotion going on when I was there; receive a complimentary foundation brush when you purchase a foundation.
Overall, it’s great! My skin looks dewy without being too shiny and cakey looking. I literally look like I just had a facial; it’s very natural looking and lasts all day. I always get compliments on my skin when I wear it because the foundation makes it look healthy and flawless. I find no need to add strobe or highlight on top because it already looks like I have it on.
Unfortunately, the product is still not in Canada but you can order it online on different sites. I would suggest using a site that provides a specialist to match your shade because the colors look different online. I’m NC30 for Mac’s Studio Fix Fluid and 3.0 for Mac’s Matchmaster and Koh Gen Do’s shade 113 worked for me. I would probably be shade 123 in the summer when I get a bit darker.
